Written by Grand Master Scyther October 5th, 2003 Hello again TCG trainers. Grand Master Scyther here with a look at Water Type Pokemon. Water types have had their ups and downs over the years. This article will take a look at some of them and give some details about each one. In the days of the Base Set, the top Water type Pokemon was Blastoise. This was mainly due to its Pokemon Power Rain Dance. In the Gameboy games Rain Dance powered up all Water type moves. In the TCG, Blastoise allows you to attach extra Water Energy Cards to other Water type Pokemon. This could be useful to power other Water type Pokemon if Blastoise gets weak or if Blastoise needs an extra Energy or two for Hydro Pump, which deals 40+ damage (+10 for each extra Water Energy attached, but no more than 20 extra). You can have a huge Water deck by combining Blastoise with Poliwhirl, also from the Base Set. It's Water Gun works the same way as Hydro Pump did with the only difference in its base damage (30) and the cost (the pump needed 3 Water while the gun needs 2 Water and 1 Colorless). For one more energy (possibly courtesy of Rain Dance) Polirath has a 40 damage Energy Removal. Definitely tops in its day. You might want to stay away from Jungle's Vaporeon. It has good HP for a Stage 1 Pokemon, as well as an awesome retreat cost of only 1, but it's two attacks are Water Gun and the somewhat okay Quick Attack. Now 30 damage for two energy seems nice, but that's only 50% of the time to begin with. There are definitely other good choices out there. A Pokemon that may stand out in the new Sandstorm expansion in Azumarill. Its attacks may seem week, but have many uses. Drizzle, for only one colorless energy, allows you to attach as many Water Energy cards from your hand to any of your Active Pokemon. This is nice in a 2-on-2 battle if your other Active Pokemon is a Water Pokemon, or just needs an energy card or two. Also, you can attach them to Azumarill itself to turn it into the Water version of Exeggutor, doing 30 damage per heads instead of 20. Not to mention its stats. 70 HP, retreat of 1, and a weakness to Electric Pokemon. Next, how about a semi-haymaker Water Pokemon. That's just what Sandstorm's Wailmer is so to speak. You can use Rollout for 2 colorless Energy for 20 damage, or wait until Hypno Wave for 1 Water and 2 colorless Energy, which does 30 damage and puts the opponent to sleep. Even though the retreat cost is 3, its 80 HP make up for that in the long run by taking a lot of damage. Plus, if Wailmer and Azumarill are your Active Pokemon, you will probably knock out a couple Pokemon in just a few turns. Well, that wraps up this article. In my next article, I'll give the inside scoop on some really nice Fire type Pokemon. Maybe I'll even resurrect good old Charizard. Until next time, happy training. |
